Box Family Research
The Box family history is a good family to research and try to break down the brick wall, The only way to really break down this brick wall, like many families trying to do research on, is by yDNA/BigY-700. There are many families with the surname Box/Boxx/Boxe with a bunch of them trying to tie into John Box who came to America in the 1620’s. As a DNA Admin for different Surname projects and Geographic DNA Projects, you just have to look of what yDNA is saying, yDNA is going to show you where you stand. YDNA only works for Male testers for that particular surname that is being research on. Having just one source of yDNA tester isn’t good enough because of the fact of adoptions or a mother giving birth to a son, but the son taking the mother’s maiden name. It is important to get around this to confirm the yDNA Paternal line. This can be done by maybe your Male first cousin who shares the same Direct Paternal Grandfather, or even a Direct Paternal Great Great Grandfather who a 3rd cousin male shares with you. Whenever doing yDNA, you always want to do this in threes.
The yDNA for the Box/Boxx/Boxe family isn’t very strong for different family lines, so no actual hard proof is solid for each line. The closest to solid proof for yDNA is the Box family who was in Laurens County, South Carolina, at that it’s still not strong enough. There are some family finder testers and some yDNA testers, the Terminal SNP isn’t modern and is different and coming from one source ancestor. Which right now, the SNP currently is at R-Z49/R-Z51. The Box family out of Ware/Lowndes County, GA only have one male tester who did familyfinder transfer, he shows to be A-M31, which is rare, there needs to be more testing and yDNA testing with more than one family member. The Box family in Ware/Lowndes County, GA in the 1840’s to 1860’s seems to have a lot of strong research to the Box family in Beaufort County, SC. John C Box 1795 and his brother William Box 1805 seem to have come from Beaufort County, South Carolina rather than Laurens County, South Carolina in AutosomalDNA. AutosomalDNA isn’t strong enough for proof because many families’ have cross paths from the 1830’s to 2000. yDNA is stronger enough proof than AutosomalDNA.
My Box family is with my Great Great Grandmother Rebecca Ann Box Revels, I’ve seen her maiden name as with two X’s or just one X, same way as pronouncing her maiden name. She was born in 1866 in Ware County, GA. From the stories that I was told growing up, that she was very nice and loved her children and grandchildren. My Grandpa Revels never got a chance to meet her, he did hear some stories about her. Rebecca parents were William J. Box and Mary Matilda Worth Box. William J. Box was the son of John C Box and Nancy Rice Box. Some researchers believe that William J Box was the son of Joseph Hansford Box, this couldn’t be possible. John C. Box 1795 shows in the 1850 Census that he was born in North Carolina. Many researchers find the 1850 census tells the most of the truth because it was the first census that was taken to where Birth Locations and family member names were added. In 1850 Census John Box shows he was born in North Carolina but his brother William Box shows he was born in 1805 in South Carolina. They lived not too far from each other. In 1860 Census John Box and his wife Nancy lived in the same Household as William Box and his wife Thaney did. John and his brother William Box most likely came from Beaufort County, South Carolina in the St. Peter’s Parish area. One of the biggest pieces of evidence of this is, John Box two children married James Worth’s two children. Both James Worth and John Box settled near each other in Georgia and James Worth was from Beaufort County, South Carolina. There is a Petition done in St. Peter’s Parish sometime around 1830 where James Worth and John Box was both listed down as signing the petitions. There is also another Petition where John Box, William Box and Allen Box is on where they all three was on. These men had to be 21 years of age to be on this Petition where William Box was born about 1805, in 1826 he could be on a Petition as a Legal age to Vote. William Box was never on the 1825 Land grant listing like John Box, Thomas Box, Allen Box was, meaning that William Box wasn’t 21 yet. William Box 1805 had a son name Allen Box who married his first cousin Rachel Box. John Box had a son name Richard Box, to which back in Beaufort County, South Carolina there was a Richard R Box.
John Box and William Box seems to be children of an Allen Box, but most likely not the same Allen Box in the 1825 Land Grant. Maybe this Allen Box is a brother or a First Cousin. In a 1797 Land Plat grant in St. Peter’s Parish, Beaufort County, South Carolina there is a Thomas Box Jr and an Allen Box both receiving Land right next to each other. Thomas Box Jr. had a son name Allen Box born between 1780-1784, however this Allen Box isn’t the same one receiving Land in 1797 because he would have been younger than 18, The law in South Carolina back then to receive a Land Grant, you had to be 21 years of age. Strong evidence here is, most likely Thomas Box Jr. and Allen Box were brothers. Thomas Box Jr. and Allen Box were both sons by Thomas Box Sr. In research found in St. Peter’s Parish is also an Elizabeth Box in the early 1800’s until about 1820. This Elizabeth Box seems to be very possible a mother to Thomas Box Jr, and Allen Box. She is also seen in some documents with a Benjamin Allen, I’m not certain who Elizabeth’s maiden name is, I would take a guess maybe she is Elizabeth Allen Box. There is no proof of this, for sure is just a speculation, not all factual documents around found as of yet that shows she and Benjamin Allen are siblings or an aunt and Nephew relation.
These two Land Plats were surveyed on September 13, 1797 in St. Peter’s Parish, Beaufort County, South Carolina, Thomas Box Jr and Allen Box next to each other, both were 21 years and older. Thomas Box Jr. did have a son name Allen Box, but he was born between 1780-1786 and clearly not at age yet to receive land. This concludes that this Allen Box was most likely a brother to Thomas Box Jr.
This is a Petition sometime around 1830 in St. Peter’s Parish, Beaufort County, South Carolina, John and William Box listed on the right page are brother’s which both took off to Georgia, the Allen Box, is either a brother or a cousin. I would say possibly their father, however the last record that I have found of Allen Box is, the one in 1810. In the 1810 Census there is a Mary Box and a M Box listed at head of the household and both are females. Thomas Box Jr was known as being married to a Mary. The M. Box might possibly be Allen’s wife. Maybe both brothers married a woman name Mary, or one was Mary and the other was Martha. It’s possible that Allen Box listed in this Petition with John and William was an older brother.
This Petition is about 1825 to 1835, However William Box isn’t listed on this Petition so maybe he isn’t old enough. One the Bottom Left is James Worth and on the bottom Right is John Box. James Worth two children married John Box two children in Georgia.
